NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! This is like the first time in months when the actual number of branches and wards has gone down. I hate this dismal information. I hope it was done to strengthen the other neighboring units. I hope it was not done because the church was getting smaller in those areas. Matt, are units more likely to be disolved at different times of the year?

I know I should really be more positive in my remarks.

The number of wards and branches is steadily increasing in the U.S. The reason for why there was no increase for this post was just because I had not updated my stake and district lists for stakes in which more units were discontinued than were created.

I think the New Port Richey ward in the Saint Petersburg Florida stake was recently dissolved

The Liberty Park (Spanish) Branch has been functioning for a few years now. Until then, it was the Liberty Park Ward for several decades.

Andrew, not to worry--congregational growth is always a bit slower in recessionws. In fact, total units only went up by 51 in the 1930s, about a 2.5% increase for 10 years.

Also, we're up by 164 units churchwide through late September, putting us on track for about a 220-unit net increase for this year.

I believe about 80 of the 164 new wards and branches so far this year are in the US. Canada is almost flat for the last two years--in fact membership dropped there last year due to heavy emigration to the US.

The Columbus (Karen) branch is in the South Salt Lake Stake, not Salt Lake South Stake (sorry to nit-pick!), and is for recent Burmese immigrants (Karen speaking)throughout the valley, many of whom reside in the stake.

Chatelain's: New Port Richey Ward was probably closed because Florida has been losing population for the last year or so because of the economy, after many years of fast growth. Still we saw 2 new stakes created there this year. Ray

The number of congregations created this year for the Church is actually much higher than 164. We are standing currently around 280 or so. The numbers that Rick provides do not include units in countries where the Church does not publish its presence. At the end of 2008 the total number of wards/branches which were in these nations was over 100. Most of these units are in Asia.

Wow! I didn't realize there were so many branches not publicized! I heard somewhere there were 43 branches in Mainland China but I only can find a dozen or so on the LDSmaps page. I guess Pakistan is another country with no published information and there must be many more if there were 100 at the end of 2008.

I was at the Laurier Branch in Montreal for the first day. I believe it's the first ever French YSA branch in the world. It was very very exciting. Montreal is such a neat place!
